The latest data released by the Washington-based Energy Research Unit revealed the list of the top Arab countries in electricity generation during 2025. The statistics showed Iraq leading in terms of the annual growth rate, while Kuwaitwas the only country among the major producers to record a decline in production.

This regional performance comes amidst a global growth of 3% in the power generation sector over the past year, bringing the global total to 32.2 thousand terawatt-hours (TWh), compared to about 31.35 thousand TWh in 2024.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continued to maintain its lead among Arab countries by a striking margin over its closest competitors, setting a new record. Below is a table showing the ranking of the top nine countries, production volumes, and annual growth rates:

A Reading into the Arab Energy Figures for 2025

  • Boom in Iraq: Iraq recorded the highest growth rate on the list at approximately 10.6%, with its production rising from 144.6 TWh in 2024 to 159.4 TWh in 2025.

  • Kuwaiti Decline for the First Time Since 2020: Kuwait witnessed a decline, the first of its kind in 5 years, as production dropped from 89.5 TWh in 2024 to 87.1 TWh.

  • Stability and Continuous Growth: Electricity generation in the UAE rose for the fifth consecutive year, while Qatar, the Sultanate of Oman, and Morocco recorded strong growth rates exceeding 5%.

Strategic Shift Towards Renewable Energy

Despite the notable developments in production figures, natural gas remains the primary component of the electricity generation mix in most Arab countries.

However, the report noted an acceleration in the pace of the regional shift towards diversifying energy sources. Arab countries are moving to increase the share of renewable and clean sources by launching massive strategic projects aimed at achieving sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in the near future.
