The Border Ports Authority Thwarts a Smuggling Attempt at Umm Qasr Port: A Firm Message to Enforce Customs Compliance

Within the framework of continuous efforts to enforce the rule of law and protect the national economy, the Iraqi Border Ports Authority announced on Saturday, September 19, 2026, the thwarting of an attempt to smuggle prohibited goods through the Northern Umm Qasr Port in Basra Governorate.

This step underscores the strict regulatory procedures implemented at border crossings and the commitment of competent authorities to enforcing the Iraqi Customs Law to curb commercial violations.

Details of the Seizure and Legal Violation Based on precise information, the staff of the Northern Umm Qasr Port Directorate successfully seized two 40-foot containers at the search and investigation checkpoint located outside the customs zone. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the containers held spare parts for motorcycles, which are materials prohibited from import under current regulations and instructions.

The importing parties deliberately failed to declare these materials within the completed customs transaction, in a blatant attempt to smuggle the goods and evade the payment of applicable customs duties and taxes.

Legal Actions Taken In a commitment to applying the proper legal frameworks, the Border Ports Authority confirmed the drafting of a formal seizure report encompassing all violating materials. Furthermore, the two containers and the customs transaction were referred to the Northern Umm Qasr Customs Police Station, in preparation for presenting the case to the judiciary to take deterrent measures against the negligent individuals and the parties involved in the smuggling crime.

A Legal Perspective from Aymen Al-Jubouri & Partners This incident highlights the grave risks associated with violating import and export laws in Iraq. Attempts at customs evasion or the introduction of undeclared goods not only expose those involved to criminal accountability and the confiscation of their merchandise, but also inflict severe damage on the commercial reputation of the companies involved.

We at Aymen Mahdi Al-Jubouri & Partners for Legal and Financial Services emphasize to our valued corporate and merchant clients the necessity of strict compliance with customs instructions. We offer our specialized consultations to ensure the integrity of your commercial procedures and to audit customs transactions in accordance with applicable laws, thereby sparing your business any legal consequences or risks.
