Lavrov and Fuad Hussein Discuss Enhancing Bilateral Relations and Developments in the Gulf Region in New York

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, ways to strengthen the bonds of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, in addition to the latest regional and international developments, foremost of which is the current situation in the Gulf region.

Consultations on the Sidelines of UN Meetings This came during a meeting between the two ministers on Friday, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two sides discussed the practical aspects of continuing to develop Russian-Iraqi relations, which are characterized by a friendly and historic nature. The following points were emphasized:

  • Enhancing Political Dialogue: Renewing mutual interest in expanding the horizons of dialogue based on mutual trust between Moscow and Baghdad.

  • Economic and Humanitarian Cooperation: Driving forward mutual cooperation and redoubling coordination in the fields of trade, economy, and humanitarian work.

Regional Developments and De-escalation On the regional and international levels, the two sides exchanged views on the most prominent pressing issues, with a special focus on the latest developments in the Gulf region and the Middle East.

The two ministers stressed the utmost importance of intensifying diplomatic and international efforts aimed at de-escalating as quickly as possible, and pushing toward a comprehensive political and peaceful settlement of existing conflicts in the region.

It is noteworthy that the agenda of the Russian delegation includes a speech by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today, Saturday (September 26), to review the Russian vision regarding Middle Eastern and global issues, evaluate the work of the international organization, and present proposals to enhance the role of the United Nations.
