Global energy markets continue to send mixed signals amid rising price gains and compounding geopolitical challenges. At the center of this landscape stands the Iraqi economy, relying on black gold export revenues as a vital pillar for budget solvency and developmental stability.
9-Month Tally: An Overview of "SOMO" Figures
Official data released by the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO) revealed that total export volumes during the first nine months of 2026 exceeded 533.45 million barrels, with an estimated monetary value approaching $37.39 billion.
Of this total, the government side deposited approximately $33.51 billion into Central Bank of Iraq accounts, distributed across southern and northern export outlets. The pipeline running through Turkey’s Port of Ceyhan handled flows comprising both northern crude—at a daily average of nearly 188,000 barrels—and Kurdistan Region crude, averaging 93,000 barrels per day.
Rebound in Basrah and Brent Crude Prices
This export momentum coincided with consecutive market gains that propelled Brent crude prices past the $117-per-barrel threshold. This positively impacted Basrah "Heavy" and "Medium" grades, which settled at levels exceeding $74 and $78 per barrel, respectively, recording weekly gains ranging between 5.9% and 7%.
This rally has provided public finances with fiscal maneuverability and bolstered foreign exchange reserves.
Logistical Challenges: The Strait of Hormuz
Despite the positive figures, export operations remain constrained by complex geographic and economic factors, most notably:
Transit Fees and Insurance Costs: Rising maritime transport costs through the Strait of Hormuz driven by heightened security concerns across critical waterways.
The Need to Diversify Outlets: The urgency of accelerating the development of overland connections and alternative pipelines to guarantee uninterrupted shipments.
Transparency and Governance: Ongoing regulatory calls to enhance transparency by reconciling actual export volumes with deposited revenues to avert financial discrepancies.
