Iraqi Ministry of Oil Announces Zero Gas Flaring by 2027: New Horizons for Investment and Energy Contracts

The Iraqi Ministry of Oil confirmed that Iraq is moving towards completely ending the flaring of associated gas, aiming to reach a "zero" rate by the end of 2027. This strategic step coincides with the Ministry's announcement that all oil fields and wells have been prepared for associated gas investment, opening the door wide for massive investment opportunities that require precise legal and contractual framing.

Associated Gas Investment and Supporting the National Economy The Deputy Minister of Oil for Gas Affairs, Mr. Izzat Saber, explained that the Ministry is moving forward with its plans aimed at the complete and optimal investment of associated gas. He pointed out that the end of this year will witness the investment of approximately 80 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) from the Kirkuk fields. This will directly contribute to meeting citizens' needs and supporting electric power plants, in addition to strengthening the pillars of the national economy.

National Effort and Developing Gas Sector Infrastructure In a related context, the Ministry of Oil continues to monitor the periodic maintenance work at the North Gas Company (Line 1000), relying on national cadres and efforts, with expectations that the work will be completed soon. For his part, the Director General of the North Oil Company, Mr. Faisal Hammadi, confirmed that all oil fields and wells are now fully prepared to support the associated gas investment portfolio, a step that reflects the seriousness of government institutions in implementing these vital projects.

Legal and Contractual Dimensions of New Energy Projects The transition towards investing in associated gas and developing infrastructure in the oil and gas sector imposes an active business environment that requires strict compliance with environmental and petroleum legislation. It also necessitates concluding investment contracts and strategic partnerships (Joint Ventures) that comply with Iraqi laws to ensure the rights of all parties and protect local and foreign investments in this vital sector.
