Arrival of a French Excavation Mission in Dhi Qar: Strengthening International Cooperation to Protect Iraqi Antiquities and Heritage

A French mission specialized in archaeological excavation and surveying has arrived in Dhi Qar Governorate to resume its work at "Tell Mazyad" in the Al-Sulaibiyat area, north of the governorate. This step is part of the second season of archaeological surveying for the site, reflecting the ongoing international and local efforts to document and protect Iraq's cultural heritage in accordance with approved national regulations and legislation.

Legal and Administrative Facilitations for Foreign Missions

In the context of adhering to government instructions and facilitating the tasks of foreign entities working in Iraq, the Dhi Qar Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate, represented by Mr. Shamil Al-Rumaid, welcomed the head of the French mission, Dr. Philip. This step implements the directives of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, represented by its Chairman, Mr. Ali Ubaid Shalgham, and the Deputy Director General of Investigations and Excavations, Mr. Suhail Al-Tamimi. These directives emphasize the importance of providing the necessary support and administrative facilitation to ensure the smooth operation of foreign missions and their compliance with regulating laws.

Objectives of the Archaeological Survey and Joint Cooperation

The current archaeological survey project aims to uncover buried historical sites and structures, revealing their features for scientific documentation and study. The mission's work includes a practical application of the principle of cooperation and knowledge transfer, as foreign missions are keen to involve Iraqi archaeological personnel from the Inspectorate's staff, which contributes to:

  • Exchanging expertise: Enhancing technical and scientific competencies between foreign and local crews.

  • Professional development: Raising the capabilities of national cadres in the fields of archaeological research and field excavation.

  • Legal compliance: Ensuring that all fieldwork proceeds in accordance with the applicable Iraqi Antiquities and Heritage Law and government regulations.
