Two Iran-linked supertankers are set to arrive in the United States in the coming weeks after being intercepted by US naval forces in the Indian Ocean. This comes as US authorities prepare to execute legal proceedings to confiscate both the vessels and their oil cargo.
Cargo Details and Maritime Route According to shipping data cited by Bloomberg, the tankers "Tiffany" and "Majestic X" sailed along the Brazilian coast last week, following their boarding by US forces in April.
The two vessels are carrying approximately 4 million barrels of Iranian oil, with a cargo value estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars based on current market prices. In this context, the US Department of Justice has announced the initiation of federal legal proceedings to seize the ships and their cargo. Reports also indicate that a third tanker, named "Lenor" (or "Davina"), took a westward route toward the Atlantic Ocean after being intercepted in the Indian Ocean this past June.
Economic Pressure and the Naval Blockade These operational developments fall within the framework of the strict naval blockade imposed by the United States on Iranian oil exports. Washington utilizes this blockade as a primary leverage tool against Tehran amidst the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
Should the two tankers dock at US ports, this move would mark one of the most significant seizures of Iranian oil shipments reaching US shores since similar confiscations in 2023. Meanwhile, US authorities are considering the activation of maritime legal mechanisms to seize the tankers as "naval prizes."
